Physiology and Psychology

PHYSIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY: A PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATION OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP*

N. H. Pronko

Portada "Empirical Foundations of Psychology"At the very outset, the student is urged to attempt an operational exercise which we believe will throw into bold relief the fundamental characteristics of psychological facts.

Let us take two different kinds of things to work with—a muscle-nerve preparation and a child. The first, a frog's leg muscle and attached nerve, is a typical laboratory assignment for the student of physiology. This portion of the frog (the rest of the frog may be discarded) can be rigged up and experimented with in such ways as to yield precise, useful knowledge about the functioning of muscles.

A weight can be hung on the leg and an electric current sent into the muscle over the nerve. In this way, the relationships  between stimulus and response may be worked out. What are are some of these findings? First, we note that in physiology we can legitimately and profitably study parts of organisms systems or even organs, such as a beating heart.

The Verbal Behavior Approach

The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it. | LEER MÁS >

"In 1957, as applied behavior analysis was developing and research on ABA was being published, Skinner published Verbal Behavior, which detailed a functional analysis of verbal behavior. What Skinner's text did was to extend operant conditioning to verbal behavior in order to fully account for the range of human behavior. Since the publication of Verbal Behavior, many applied behavior analysts, including Jack Michael, Mark Sundberg, Jim Partington, and Vince Carbone, have conducted and published research on verbal behavior, much of which can be found in The Analysis of Verbal Behavior journal. This body of research serves as the basic and applied foundation of teaching VB as part of an ABA program, or what is now sometimes referred to as AVB, as discussed above. The science of applied behavior analysis now has a solid empirical foundation to support it, due largely in part to Skinner and Ivar Lovaas."

Defeating Autism: a damaging delusion

Behavioral Intervention for Young Children With Autism
